Killie picked up only their 7th win of the season in all competitions with an edgy 4th round Scottish Cup win over St Johnstone in Perth. Under fire gaffer Gary Locke showed faith in the players that drew with Hearts at Rugby Park last week by naming an unchanged side.

At the start of the day, there were doubts as to whether the game would go ahead due to the wintry weather. However, Killie were the first to adapt to the conditions as they scored what would prove to be the only goal of the game inside six minutes. Youngster Craig Slater with a wonderfully executed free-kick which sailed beyond the despairing dive of Alan Mannus in the Saints goal.

Killie were not content with their one goal advantage however, and pressed hard for a second, with both Josh Magennis and Adam Frizzel not able to give the Ayrshire side a two goal cushion. This lack of quality in the final third has been a problem for Gary Locke so far this season, one that he will be hoping to rectify during the transfer window.

St Johnstone were not going to walk away from the cup that easily and came right back into the match in the second half. David Wotherspoon, Chris Millar and Graham Cummins all going closest for the home side. However, the away side always looked like a threat when breaking from the back. Jamie MacDonald again proved his worth with an excellent double save to keep Killie’s hopes alive.

Eventually, time ran out for the 2014 winners and Killie, against most expectations, are through to Monday’s 5th round draw.
